We are so fortunate to have such incredible talent from Around the World converging at the FPBA Convention in February to share their knowledge and demonstrate their expertise in our craft.
Here is a list of artists who have committed to teach:
Arla Albers says if she had just one thing in the whole wide world to do, it would be face painting and she has been doing that for over 20 years at birthday parties, corporate events, restaurants and picnics. Being Mrs. Claus is also one of her specialties. For the past 30 years or so, Arla has lived in Fairfax, VA. Arla comfortably paints 20-22 faces per hour on a regular basis. She prides herself in a good looking face that is also fast. Her teaching skills are learned as she has her master’s degree in Organizational Development and a teaching degree before grad school. Arla has taught for about 7 years all across the country as well as in her community.
My mum did a theatre makeup course 15 years ago in the Netherlands and used me as a model most of the time. She got to work with some great bodypaint artists and we entered many competitions. After some time I decided I would rather give the painting a go instead of modeling. We have been working and painting together since.
I love transforming people into different characters - making the things I have in my head into real life creations. It's like telling stories, and I am creating the characters who play the lead. I also have completed a fashion design degree so I add a lot of costuming and props to my work.
A steady hand is very helpful as a body painter. Time management is good too - a body is quite a big canvas so you need to know what you can do in a certain amount of time.
For me it's normal to paint naked people but I guess a lot of people would find it a bit strange. It is definitely more fun than painting a normal canvas.
I guess it's an odd profession. But I am so immersed in this art form, as most of my friends are face and body paint artists, so I take it as normal.
I wish more people would speak their minds, instead of being polite. Just be honest. I am Dutch so people do regard me as blunt at times, but at least people know that I am sincere when I critique or compliment something.
You live this life only once, so it would be a waste of time doing a job that you don't like doing. That's my motto.
Sitting in a stroller in The Efteling, an amusement park in the Netherlands is my first memory. It is a beautiful park, there is nothing like it. I think this place inspired me to be an artist.
Smoking is a total waste of money. I did it for a few years before I came to New Zealand with my family. The money I would have saved ...

I am a Geographer at heart. It was the only course material in school that I understood and I still feel so lucky that I was able to follow my passion. It got me some pretty cool jobs making maps for government and private agencies which was cool.
But then my passions shifted and I followed the awe I felt when I was fooling around on the internet, figuring it out and making websites. (Plus it was the PERFECT maternity leave do-it-from-home job!)
Somehow I manage to juggle three daughters ages 2, 4 and 6 with the help of my husband of 15 years, who with the patience of you-know-who, talks us girls down from the ledge on a regular basis!
I have been working as a professional website developer since 2001, an Independent Contractor since 2003, and a new passion has cropped up for me which (in a really strange way) perfectly compliments this job. Because now I've re-invented myself as a professional face painter since 2008.
A lucky break taking a class with Mark Reid and working with the NABPC website has led me to working with Karen Owens on the FPBA website.
Our goal is to develop a website for all the painters in our community to upgrade their artistic skills and business knowledge, make new friends and become a central resource for face and body art.
I'm looking forward to meeting all of you interested in getting the Internet to work for you and I'll empower you to be able to set up your own online presence. If you are already there - then let's capitalize on what you've got and help build your Personal brand!
I'm so happy that I've been able to follow my passions to drive the direction of my career, and excited that I've been given the opportunity to share my knowledge with you, and help anyone who is interested to drive their passion out there on the Internet too!

For twenty five years, Star has performed his own unique style of performance airbrushing at the world famous Sawdust Art Festival in Laguna Beach, California. People come from all over the world to experience this renowned artist’s colony summer-long festival. Star paints between three and six faces all at once. It is an amazing spectacle to watch and be a part of. “I feel a rhythm with the music when I paint and it is all based on the crowd’s reactions. When they are cheering, I really get into it like hitting a groove. Face painting then becomes my true performance art.”
It is plain to see that Star has a deep-rooted passion for airbrush art. Star says, “My reward for my art is watching the faces of children light up and smile so widely when they see what I have done on their faces.” starmanair@gmail.com
